You only need to collect sales tax from customers within states where you have a sales tax nexus. According to my research, the following are what constitutes a sales nexus:

• You will always have a nexus in your home state
• You will create a nexus in a state if you have a physical presence, such as an office, warehouse, or another branch
• You will create a nexus in a state where you have a remote employee
• Some states consider creating a nexus if you have an affiliate there
• Some states consider it a nexus if you make temporarily sales or participate in trade shows in their state

Of course, nexus laws may still vary depending on where you are, which is why it is important to look for an experienced professional who understands the rules of the state you’re doing business in. You can check out your state’s accounting associations for recommendations.
